Family Whispers

همسات اسرية@ Reminding others of the blessing of security and safety is a foundational principle in Islamic law and an educational value deeply rooted in religious texts. The Almighty says: "Who has fed them, [saving them] from hunger, and has made them safe from fear" (Surah Quraysh: 4). Ubayd Allah ibn Mihsan al-Ansari reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever among you wakes up secure in his home, healthy in his body, and possessing his daily sustenance, it is as if the entire world has been brought to him." This was recorded by al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad (300) and by al-Tirmidhi (2346), who classified it as hasan gharib (good but with a single chain of narration); it was also graded as hasan (good/sound) by al-Albani. Deepening this value and fostering a true appreciation for this profound blessing can be achieved by emphasizing the following concepts:

  1. Security is a divine favor and a gift from the Lord—Exalted and Majestic is He—bestowed upon whichever of His servants He wills. "Do they not see that We have made [Makkah] a safe sanctuary, while people are being snatched away all around them? Do they then believe in falsehood and reject the blessings of Allah?" (Surah al-Ankabut: 67).
  2. Security and stability are contingent upon specific conditions, foundations, standards, and requirements. The Almighty says: "Those who believe and do not mix their faith with any wrongdoing—for them [is]..." "...security, and they are [rightly] guided." (Surah Al-An'am: 82). 3 - Reminding [others] and drawing attention to the value of this blessing and the high status of this divine favor. Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman narrated: "We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when he said, 'Count for me how many people profess Islam.' We replied, 'O Messenger of Allah, do you fear for us, even though we number between six hundred and seven hundred?' He said, 'You do not know; perhaps you will be tested.' Indeed, we were tested, to the point that a man among us could only pray in secret." (Reported by Al-Bukhari, 3060; and Muslim, 149). 4 - Expressing gratitude and praise to the Lord—Exalted and Majestic is He—for both manifest and hidden blessings. The Almighty says: "And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'" (Surah Ibrahim: 7). Among the daily Prophetic practices to instill this gratitude within the soul is the Prophet’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) statement: "Whoever says in the morning, 'O Allah, whatever blessing has come to me or to any of Your creation this morning, it is from You alone—You have no partner. To You belongs all praise, and to You belongs all thanks,' has fulfilled the duty of gratitude for that day. And whoever says the same in the evening has fulfilled the duty of gratitude for that night." (Reported by Abu Dawud, 5073; and An-Nasa'i, 9835). 5 - Seeking refuge in and holding fast to Allah—the Almighty and Majestic—when calamities and misfortunes occur. It involves training the heart to recognize that the only true sanctuary in times of fear, the onset of trials (fitan), or the emergence of dangers is Allah alone; He is the One to whom we turn for relief, and in Him alone we place our trust to remove [such hardships]. ...evils and repelling enemies. Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman reported: "Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was faced with a distressing matter, he would turn to prayer." (Narrated by Abu Dawud, 1319; and Ahmad, 23299). Abu Musa al-Ash'ari also reported that whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) feared a group of people, he would say: "O Allah, we place You before them, and we seek refuge in You from their evils." (Narrated by Abu Dawud, 1537; al-Nasa'i, 8631; and Ahmad, 19720). O Allah, grant us security in our homelands, protect our leaders and those in authority over us, grant us victory over those who show hostility toward us, and shield us from the evil of the wicked, the schemes of the immoral, and the calamities that may arise by night or by day.
